BECAUSE GRATITUDE STARTS WITH THE GROWN-UPS THEY TRUST!

Happy Friday Friends!

Been thinking a lot about how we instill gratitude in the kiddos that are entrusted to our care. Gratitude doesn’t usually develop on its own—kids learn it through what they see, hear, and practice every day. As nannies, we play a powerful role in shaping thankful hearts. It’s so important that we are weaving these lessons into our regular interactions with kids. Hopeful these few simple ways we can build gratitude into daily routines will help!

1. Model Gratitude

Children imitate adults. Say things like, “I’m thankful we get to play outside,” or “Thank you for helping me clean up.” Hearing gratitude regularly teaches them to express it naturally.

2. Teach Simple Phrases

Many kids don’t know how to express appreciation yet. Give them easy scripts like “Thank you,” “That was kind,” or “I appreciate…”

3. Build Gratitude Into Routines

Make gratitude part of the day:

  • Morning: “What’s something you’re excited for?”

  • Meal-time: “Let’s thank the person who made our food.”

  • Goodbye: “What made you happy today?”

4. Read Stories About Thankfulness

Choose books that highlight kindness and appreciation. After reading, ask questions like, “How did the character show gratitude?”

5. Point Out Helpers

Help children notice people who serve them—teachers, custodians, office staff. Ask, “How can we thank them today?” This builds awareness and humility.

6. Encourage Acts of Kindness

Kids understand gratitude better when they give. Simple activities—making a thank-you card, helping clean up, making a craft for someone—help them feel the joy of appreciation.

7. Celebrate Thankful Moments

Praise genuine gratitude when you see it: “I noticed you said thank you on your own!” This reinforces the behavior without forcing it.

Gratitude grows through small daily moments! When we model it, practice it, and celebrate it, children learn to see the good around them—and carry that mindset for the rest of their life.
